Laura Smither Memorial Quilt

This quilt was made by the quilters on the Swap in 1997, in loving memory of Laura Kate Smither, a 12-year-old homeschooler who was abducted and murdered in April 1997.

A letter from her parents follows:

Dear Lisa,

The quilt arrived, perfectly intact, on Tuesday, December 23rd. We were having a bad day and elected to delay opening the package. We opened it on Wednesday with our son, David.

It is the most beautiful quilt we have ever seen. We love the names and locations on the individual squares telling us where each one came from. We have come to realize how many lives Laura touched, and it means a great deal to us to know that she is not forgotten. We will cherish this quilt always.

We will use the quilt each year when the Laura Kate Smither Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a homeschooler, is presented. The rest of the time, it will hang in our living room as a reminder of all that is good in people.

It is difficult to find the words to express how much your time, energy and love uplifts us. Each time we hit bottom, the Lord sends an earthly angel to bring us out of despair. Each family represented in the quilt has helped us endure this first Christmas without Laura.

Thank you,

Bob Smither
